Treble bet on 4 matches

Hello, I accidentally put €2 on a treble bet while there were 4 matches selected.(The app froze and I clicked on accident) €8 is subtracted from my account. When do I win? I'm a beginner and I have no clue.

Question on getting a tip for a treble, and placing them as single bets instead

A tipster I follow will give out bet of the day, and then also a treble or two. Now, on his site he says that trebles and accas are not a good way to make consistent profit. So instead I am splitting down the bets into singles - does this make sense from a profit perspective? All seem to be below 1.9 or so, just struggling with the maths...

A PC-User's Purchase "Guide" (it's not...just the ramblings of an idiot) to High Quality Audio on your system.

Hello friends, today I'd like to talk about an aspect of our glorious systems that get overlooked a lot: our audio experience on our battlestations. Thanks to paoper for formatting. Again disclaimer that I am an idiot, so take this post with a grain of salt. Better info and more accurate info from people way more knowledgeable than I am is readily available from /audiophile /budgetaudiophile and /headphones, this is just a start-up guide for the beginner.
NOTE: The monster I gave birth to has become too long. I felt that instead of a short list of things to order, I needed to give context as high fidelity is really all about what sound is like in your experience. Also a fun read if you are interested. Feel free to skip to the actual list (ctrl+f active speakers, passive speakers, headphones, subwoofer, amplifier)!
I have limited the price range of the products, because this is after all just food for thought and not even a proper guide; real audio purchases will require elbow-grease and research from your end to see if the product's sound signature will match your preferences in music and sound. If your product is not here, do not worry. I have put in products that I have had experience with and those that were recommended by multiple reviewers I hold in high regard (with the exception of a 2.1 system you will see later), and I had to consider the endless number of headphones/speakers vs the ones that are worth your hard-earned cash (and products vs how they compare to my current setup which includes both "high-end" and budget options).

I've been building systems for myself and others since I randomly took a buildapc course in middle school (currently 28) and enjoy music very much (I grew up on linkin park, dre, biggie smalls, 3 6 mafia, tupac, ac/dc, red hot chilli peppers am fond of electro and dubstep and various genres of music). I have 2 decades of experience playing saxophone, clarinet, and the electric guitar, and have performed in jazz bands, rock bands, and an orchestra. My ear is highly trained from raw musical performance and not just listening to speakers from home, as well as having the nuance to differentiate between good speakers. I have owned many many forms of audio gear (instruments, speakers, headphones, studio monitors).

So wtf is this?

So occasionally while answering questions on this subreddit (mainly on why new builder's systems aren't posting, or what components they should get, or just mourning with fellow builders for systems that have passed on as well as celebrating the birth of new systems and fellow pc builders who take their rite of passage of building their own system with their own two hands) I would come across the occasional "what speakers/headphones are best under $xx" and with the state of pc products being "gaming rgb ultimate series XLR" or w/e, it's hard to discern what audio products are actually worth your money. Note that if you are using just "good enough" cheap speakers, any of the speakers/headphones on this list will blow your mind away. Get ready to enter a new world of audio.

Why should I bother getting better speakers/headphones?

I have owned $20 logitech speakers, I currently own $1500 speakers. I have owned varying levels of headphones. The first half-decent (to my standards) speakers I had was a hand me down stereo set from an uncle. This thing was massive, but this thing was good. It's difficult to explain to you the sensation of music enveloping you with great speakers. Speakers are meant to reproduce sound, as in the sound of the instruments in the song. So great speakers and headphones can literally make you FEEL the music like at a rave or a concert or performance in the comfort of your home. This is why Home Theaters were so popular in the 80s/90s.
Upgrading will GREATLY enhance your music, netflix and gaming experience. In fact with passive bookshelf speakers, you can not only use them for your desktop setup, but also chuck them together with a tv and you've got a fine starter home theater system in your hands. You can even upgrade down the line incrementally, one speaker at a time, to a 2.1, 3.1, 5.1, 5.2, 7.2 Dolby Atmos Home Theater Setup where your movies make you feel like your in SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
I currently live in a small apartment with my TV right next to my battlestation, and when i want to sit down on my couch and watch TV, I simply move 1 speaker from my desk to next to my TV, turn my AVR on and I have an easy 5.1 home theater in my tiny apartment. Move the speaker, revert back to 2.1 (or 5.1 if i choose to but i dont because of badspeaker placement when I'm sitting at my desk) amazingness at my battlestation. Consider this an investment into massively improving your experience of playing video games, watching netflix, or listening to music. You think those 4k graphics and ULTRAWIDE monitor is giving you more immersion in your game? Shit...having great speakers or headphones can make you feel like you're IN NORMANDY BEACH DURING THE FUCKING LANDINGS

General considerations (or feel free to just skip ahead to the list)

Now, I totally understand using simple logitech speakers due to budget/space/easy-access from best buy or not knowing about the wider audio world. So I am here today to give you a perspective on what audio components are TRULY worth your hard-earned cash. I have owned $20 logitech speakers in college, I have owned guitar amps as well as studio monitors/other speakers ranging from $100-$1500. Do know that all of this information is readily available in /BudgetAudiophile /audiophile and /headphones . I am merely condensing all of it into a single list, and attempt to sort of explain it to the pc builders, or just an idiot rambling.
If you would like more information on specific speakers, I would check out reviewers on youtube like zerofidelity, steve guttenberg, nextbigthing (nbt) studios, and thomas and stereo. For headphones, metal751, innerfidelity, Ishca's written reviews, DMS.
Z reviews is okay and he reviews everything from amps and dacs to speakers and headphones, but he gives 90% of his products good reviews, and has affiliate links to every single product he you see where my dislike of him as a reviewer comes from. He is still an expert audiophile , he just chooses to not use his knowledge and ramble on in his videos, plus the shilling. Great place to start for audiophiles, as he is still a professional. I just think many move on to other reviewers.
Also with speakers, speaker placement is extremely important. Get those speakers off your desk and the woofers/tweeters to your ear level NO MATTER THE COST. Stack boxes/books, buy speaker stands/isolation pads from amazon, at worst buy yoga blocks from amazon. Put your speakers on them, get ready for even better audio.
General rule of thumb: dont buy HiFi at msrp. There are ALWAYS deals on speakers/headphones to take advantage of at any given time (massdrop for headphones, parts-express, accessories4less, crutchfield, adorama, Sweetwater, guitar center, etc). Speakers will get cheaper over time as manufacturers have to make room for new products/refreshes of the same models just as with headphones. If theres a particular headphone model you want, check to see if massdrop has it (website where users of the website decide what niche products the website will mass order, and both the website and you the users get reduced pricing).
Now this list is just simple guide. Obviously for $150 budget, theres probably like 10 different speakers to choose from. You will catch me repeat this many many times but sound is subjective, I don't know what genres of music you enjoy and what sound signatures in headphones/speakers you would prefer (warm sounds? bright? aggressively forward? laid back sound signature? importance of clarity vs bass?) So consider this list with a grain of salt, as this is after all, the ramblings of an idiot on reddit.

So I will be splitting this list into 4 categories:
And before I start, bass depth and low end does not fucking equal bad boomy bass. I absolutely detest low quality boomy bass like in Beats headphones and general "gaming speakers" or w/e. Also the budetaudiophile starter package is the dayton audio b652 + mini amp combo from parts-express. All the speakers that were considered were basically compared to the b652 before making it on here (and whether they justified the price bump over the b652)

Active vs. Passive (crude explanation)

So when a speaker plays music from your pc, the audio is processed by the audio card on your motherboard, which is then sent to the amplifier where the signal is amplified, and then finally is sent to be played on your speakers. Active speakers like logitech speakers that have a power cable running from the speakers directly to the wall socket have built-in amplifiers to power the speakers, whereas passive speakers require a separate amplifier to amplify the audio signal and feed the speakers power. Active vs passive, no real difference as both types of speakers will have good audio quality depending on how they are made and which ones you buy, but in the ultra budget section of speakers (under $300) actives tend to be cheaper than their passive counter parts. This is due to the manufacturer cutting corners elsewhere.
Take for instance the Micca MB42X passive speakers($90) which also have a brother, the Micca PB42X ($120) powered speakers. Same exact speaker, but built in amp vs the amp you buy. Obviously the mb42x will sound marginally better purely from the virtue that the amplifier is not inside the goddamn box. But the mb42x + amp + speaker wire will probably cost you anywhere from basic $130 to $200 with difference in amplifier and whether you use bare speaker wire or banana plugs/cables. Cabling aesthetics and management will be greatly affected, with sound quality affected to a lesser degree, or more (but at what cost?). Amp choice to be explained later.
Now generally speakers should be recommended based on your music/audio preferences and tastes as speakers and in a larger part, speaker brands will have their own unique sound signatures that some will love and others will hate as sound is such a subjective experience. But since this is meant to cater to a wide audience, note that my list is not the ALL inclusive, and again is only the ramblings of an idiot.

If you want to add bluetooth capabilities to your wires active or passive speakers, simply buy the esinkin W29 wireless bluetooth module, plug your speakers in, connect to your bluetooth on pc/phone/w/e, enjoy.

Simply connect to your PC or TV via 3.5mm (or the occasional usb).
Note: you may experience a hissing with active speakers that may annoy you to no end even up to the $400 mark. This is a result of the amplifier being built in to the speaker in close proximity, as well as sometimes the manufacturer cutting corners elsewhere. Passive speakers do not have this unless you buy a really shitty amp. Note that while bigger woofer size does not necessarily indicate better quality/bass, this does more often than not seem to be the case as manufacturers put bigger woofers on the higher stepup model.
Note that while I have included 2.1 systems here, I would always recommend you get good bookshelves first, save up money and buy a subwoofer separate.

Example options

These speakers will require you to buy a separate amplifier, as well as separate cables. But the passive route allows you to have a modular audio system that allows you to upgrade parts as you go along in your life (yes I said life for once you dip your toes into high fidelity, you will get hooked onto a great lifelong journey searching for the perfect setup), or even just add parts in altogether (like having a miniamp on your desk for your passive speakers, having a separate dac or bluetooth module for your speakers so you can connect the passive speakers via USB or bluetooth wirelessly, stacked on top of a headphone dac/amp combo, stacked on top of a preamp, etc). Amplifier list to follow later.
Passive speaker specs to pay attention to will be their impedance (measured in ohms) and their sensitivity (measured in xx db/1w/1m). Speaker ratings in wattage are measurements of how much power can be driven to them (higher watts, higher volume...once again crude explanation). A 20 watt x 2 channel amp (measured in 4 ohms) is enough to power 4 and 6 ohm speakers rated at 100 watts to moderate/decently loud listening levels on your desktop. Now the sensitivity thing. A speaker with a rating of 85db/1m/1w means it will produce 85 decibels of noise at 1 meter with 1 watt of power. Now this not make the same speaker go up to 90 decibels may require 10 or 15 watts of power depending on other variables. Depending on how loudly you play your music and what impedance/sensitivity your speakers have will result in your choice of amplifiers. More on this later.
The thing about passive bookshelf speakers are that you can use them in your desktop setup, AND with your TV as a legitimate starter 2.1 home theater setup (which you can upgrade to 3.1, and then 5.1/5.2, just buy a used receiver from craigslist for 50 bucks, ez)

What you will need for passive setup:

Note that passive speakers and amp require you to purchase speaker wire separately (fairly cheap) and strip them (youtube video will guide you, very easy). Or if you like clean cable management and easy setups, banana plug cables from amazon will set you straight, and while these banana plugs and cable are nice and PURELY OPTIONAL, they will add up in cost as your buy more of them for frankenstein 2.1 cabling. Also a 3.5mm to rca cable will be required. The connection will be your pc -> 3.5mm->rca->amp->speaker wire-> speaker wire->speaker. (replace speaker wire with banana plug if going that route). Subwoofer connection will be explained in subwoofer section.

Example options

Okay here is where we need to get into specific numbers. Active speakers have built-in amplifiers so they are exempt. But passive speakers will require separate amps and so you will need to pay attention to certain specs. In speakers you will need to pay attention to their impedance (measured in ohms) and their sensitivity (measured in xx db/1m/1w). The typical mini amplifier will be class D (small form factor amps for desktop use) and their wattage per channel will be usually expressed in 4ohms. Take for instance the popular SMSL SA50. This is an amp that delivers 50 watts to its 2 channels, rated at 4 ohms. Speakers will have impedance of 4, 6, or 8 ohms usually. 50 watts at 4 ohms can be 25 watts at 8 ohms, but is probably more like 20 watts at 8 ohms, refer to product specs for specific wattage ratings at specific ohms. Speakers with high sensitivity (85-95 db/1w/1m) that have 6 ohm impedance are easier to drive with lower wattage.
But here's the thing, an the smsl sa50 will not deliver 50 CLEAN watts. Somewhere in the 30-40w range distortion will start to appear. But for reference, 30 clean watts is enough to drive sony cs5s to uncomfortably loud levels in an apartment (the whole apt, not just your room) so listening on your desktop, you only really need 10-15 clean watts (only after turning up your preamp input to maximum volume, which in this case is your youtube/windows10 volume level). Do note that if you have the space, a used $60 AV Receiver that will just shit out watts and have 5.1 surround will be the best, but these things are massive.

Example options

If you need more watts than the AD18, you're gonna need to get a class a/b amp that just shits out watts for cheap, or get a used av receiver. If you want a new one, the best budget option is the DENON AVR-S540BT 5.2 channel AVR from accessories4less.

Good subwoofers are expensive, and cheap subwoofers will hurt your listening experience rather than improve it (muddy boomy shitty bass). Your best bet may be to simply find a used subwoofer from craigslist or offerup, just dont get the polk audio PSW10, this is a very common sub you see on the 2nd hand market, because it is a shitty sub and so people get rid of it. Now as to whether you need a subwoofer. If you are in a dorm, don't get a subwoofer. Because.... if you live in a dorm, do not get a fucking subwoofer. Now if you live in a small apartment, fear not, proper subwoofer management will save you noise complaints. A good subwoofer will produce good quality low end you can hear and feel without having to turn up the volume. You want to look at the subwoofer's lowest frequency it can go to. That will show you how "tight" the bass will be. Now, low volume levels on a good sub will produce that bass for you without vibrating your walls (though subwoofer and speaker isolation as well as PLACEMENT (refer to the sub-crawl) will do more for getting the most sound out of your speakers without having to turn up the volume....and just turn off the sub after a reasonable time)
Now as to how to add a subwoofer to your system will depend on what setup you have and the available connections. If your speakers or amplifier has a subwoofer output, simply connect that to your subwoofer, set the crossover freuency (the frequency at which the subwoofer will start making sound) to 80hz, or lower depending on how low of a frequency our bookshelves can go down to.
If your speakers/amp do not have a subwoofer out, you will need to find a subwoofer that has high level speaker inputs. You will need to connect your bookshelves to the speaker outputs on the subwoofer via speaker wire/banana plugs, and then run speaker wire/banana plugs from the subwoofer input to your amplifier, ending with rca to 3.5mm connection to your pc.

Example options

Okay, I keep saying headphones and not headsets right. But you ask, Kilroy, you're an idiot. You're posting on buildapc for PC gamers and builders but you're talking headphones and not headsets. How idiotic are you? Pretty big, but friends hear me out. Now I used to live in South Korea, where PC Bangs (internet cafes) set the nation's standards for computers. All the places had to get the best bang for the buck pc gear to stay in business and remain competitive (all 100 computers at these places had like i5-6600k and gtx 1080 in 2015 or something I don't remember, along with mechanical BLUE SWITCH FUCCCCCCKKKKKKKK (imagine 100 blue switch keyboards being smashed on in a small underground area in Seoul) keyboards and decent headsets.
So I have tried MANY MANY different headsets, here is my conclusion. Just get proper headphones and get either get an antlion modmic, or V-MODA Boompro mic both available on amazon. (short list of mics later) or get proper headphones and usb mic. Okay, I have seen the headphone recommendation list, and the only one I would give any (if at all) weight to in the usual pc websites that our subreddit goes to, is the list from rtings. These guys mainly measure monitors and tvs (very well might i add) but the writer for their audio section is lacking it seems.
Please dont get Astro AXX headphones or corsair rgb xxxxxx w/e. Please for the love of god, take your good hard earned cash and get yourself a NICE pair of cans my fellow PC users. The mic part is secondary as GOOD headphones will forever change your PC using and music listening experience FOREVER
The TWO EXCEPTIONS that I have observed to this rule are the Hyperx Clouds and Cooler Master mh751/752.

Example options

Now obviously, there's other choices. A metric fuck load of them. But I had to account for how much you should be paying (price range) for upgrades in sound quality and performance.

Example options (Wireless headsets)

Okay. Wireless headsets, now let's think why do you need a wireless headset? Do you want to walk around your house while on discord? Maybe you want to keep the headset on while having to afk real quick for a smoke break or whatnot.

HEADPHONE AMP/DAC (digital to analogue converter)

My knowledge/experience with headphone amps and dacs are...extremely lacking, I'm more of a speaker guy. But, here is a list for you guys.

Other mics? Yes, but are they worth the extra $$ for marginally better audio recording? You decide.

Concluding remarks

Cool. Stay safe in these dark times brothers. Have a glorious day.

Confession from an Old Ham

Background: I have a new HF rig. I tried to make my first SSB QSO tonight. So... I viewed a few YouTube videos about proper voice settings; you know, treble, bass, width of signal, compression, etc. I cut my power back to my dummy load and monitored my own signal until it was "just right." I listened to a neat net on 80 meters and waited a full 50 minutes to check in. I called and called... Net control didn't hear me and nobody relayed my signal.
I figured it was changing band conditions until I realized I had the rig still set to 1 watt. I felt embarrassed and stupid. I bet I'll never do that again. 1 watt on 75 /80 meters in the summer just doesn't cut it.
Moral of the story is every one makes mistakes and we can learn (and ridicule sometimes) from each other. The ham group is a great bunch of people. Enjoy the hobby. BTW, I did call for a signal report right after the net closed, and my rig did fine at 75 watts. 73
Edit: I've been a ham for 60 years, Extra Class and still do CW, so I kinda know my away around basic things. I've had my new HF rig for 9 months and used in to CW, FT8 and other digital modes and know the menu settings pretty well. There are a lot of them! I've operated a LOT of SSB through the years and I didn't think I had 'mic fright' but I actually did. There really is something that sometimes drains a person, and with me tonight, it took a toll. I'll try tomorrow night. Can anyone explain 'mic fright?' I think I can tonight relate to new technicians trying to make their first's got to be nerve racking.
The net I was trying to check into is: The FARM Net, it meets daily on 3937 kc at 0200 UTC and has check-ins from ID, MT, AZ, CA, CO, UT, NM, NV, WY, & VE7, It was really interesting to see what's really happening with 75 meter band conditions. The net has nothing to do with FARMS or FARMING, it stands for "Friendly Amateur Radio Mission."

How my first cello lesson went, for other beginners who are wondering what a private lesson might be like.

So I had a week to explore my brand new cello before starting private lessons (I'm 48). With Covid-19, security measures were solid (washing of hands, masks, teacher sitting away unless she had to correct something etc.), so I felt safe and lucky that the music academy reopened so fast.
The first thing that pleasantly surprised me if that my teacher started right away, no chit chat besides hello pleased to meet you, so my money was respected, not a minute lost. Posture, how to hold the bow, how to rosin it correctly (she told me she uses Kolstein cello rosin if I'm not happy with my Hidersine), and how to not have tension in my body when I play.
She then moved to the correct angle of the bow on the strings and doing small circles on them, which went well, so she made me do full up and down bow soon after, giving advice on the correct angle for a better sound. I was bowing pretty straight already from my 1 week of exploration at home so we did not had to work on that too much.
We practiced on all open strings, she wanted smooth but full sound, explaining how to use the weight of the arm, using index finger when at the tip for a consistent sound and so on. Then she asked me if I wanted tapes for the first position, lol of yes please! She placed 3 tapes with the use of a weird complicated tuner doing waves and she let me try first position with guidance. Then she gave me basic theory sheets (name of the strings, notes, basic symbols on a sheet music).
She also gave me Ode to Joy (from Symphony no.9, Beethoven) as a first piece but I don't have to start it this week (lol you bet I started already).
I'm one happy student, I had a blast and cannot wait for next week; this was so fun! As I was picking up my stuff I learned baroque is her favorite style and Jacqueline du Pré is her all time favorite cellist, which is amazing because it's pretty much the same for me! Later that day she emailed me an abstract of our lesson so I don't forget anything and gave me my homework:
- Piatti exercises 1, 2 and 3 - practice scales of G, C and D major - learn the bass clef notes on the staff and cello (I know treble only)
She told me to practice with short sessions instead of a long one per day. I realized it wasn't too much. Those scales all have the same fingering, I can locate all the notes on the cello, just need to learn their name, and the first position is not too much of a struggle right now, besides the darn pinky lacking strength and flexibility but I'm working on it. The tapes are super helpful too.
Overall, a very good experience as an adult beginner and my teacher gave a me a good impression, we'll get along just fine I think. Might even vlog my progression each month. I just have regrets at not starting cello earlier in my life because I'm in love with it!
If, like me, you are an adult beginner, I hope this will encourage you to find a teacher instead of learning on your own. There was so many little things to be aware of just for posture and angles, I bet there are a ton more for the rest, better to learn correctly and not develop injuries or bad habits. No matter if you can afford 30 min, 45 or an hour, I realized after my lesson how much faster you learn with a teacher. Even once every 2 weeks would be good for those with a tight budget or less time to practice.

Unleashed pt. 15

I've had a lot of work stuff this past week, deadlines etc... I'm still trying for one chapter a week as a minimum, this is a quick one. Thanks to u/eruwenn for editing and smoothing out the rough edges.
First / Prev / Next
Embar arrived at the Ambassadorial Suite to find Aaron reading, and Ranjaz playing one of the simple Earth games Alexa had converted to work on their devices. He passed a datapad to Aaron, who gave his thumb print without looking. “What’s this?”
Ranjaz threw a cushion at Aaron. “Ask that before giving your print!”
Embar pulled up a seat at the large table littered with cups and plates. He picked up a Rinoxian friendly cupcake from one of the plates. “Bounty hunter license.”
“Bounty hunter?” Aaron and Ranjaz replied in unison. “How in Tulseria’s name did he get one of those!” Ranjaz added.
“Lieutenant Chae’Sol pulled some strings.” Embar finished his cupcake and gave a Sergeant’s report. “Seems Aaron caught some bliss smugglers a couple of cycles ago. Aaron identified a couple of the crew who had skimmed some for themselves, and when security searched the ship they found a lot more. Arrested them, and turns out one of them was wanted, very wanted. Fifty thousand credits. He wanted Aaron to get the reward, and you need a license to receive bounties.”
“Fifty thousand credits!” Ranjaz almost choked. “That’s almost a whole celes' wages!”
Embar laughed. “Plus ten thousand a head for the Bliss smugglers. Gal. Fed is cracking down hard on that brain rot. It’s going to be almost treble by the time the Lieutenant is done.”
Aaron was looking through his phone. “That’s great, I’ve made less than a thousand credits from the cupcakes.”
Ranjaz put down his game. “In four cycles?” He made some quick calculations. “You have to sell over eight hundred cupcakes just to make one hundred credits. That’s eight thousand cupcakes!”
Aaron shrugged. “It’s growing slowly, almost all of the sales are from the Azrimad and Arkellis. I did see some from trader ships that had passed through and a couple of the stations they visited. We need better marketing.” Returning to the subject at hand he asked Embar. “So, what does the license mean?”
Embar took a bite out of his second cupcake, he was glad Aaron had found a sugar substitute he could metabolise. “Let’s see. You can claim bounties. They don’t let just anyone go after criminals.”
Ranjaz let out an exaggerated groan at Embar’s dry description. He sat up straight and said, “Bounty hunters are the coolest! Except when they bring you in over a tiny misunderstanding and you end up being forced to do community service for the Galactic Federation.”
Embar chuckled. “You broke into a military facility, stole top secret plans, and then auctioned them to the highest bidder. Where was the misunderstanding?”
Ranjaz gave a fiendish smile and waggled his fingers. “That they think I only took those plans.” He saw Embar’s eyebrow raise and quickly moved on. “Anyway. Bounty hunters. You get to carry a weapon anywhere -”
“- public places and some restricted areas.” Embar added.
“- you can get all the ship weapons the rest of us are prohibited from getting. The really cool stuff -” Ranjaz was getting excited.
“- No. You can get some upgrades, and items, that are normally reserved for security forces.” Embar corrected, taking another bite of cupcake.
“- You can go anywhere, boss people around and if anyone gives you trouble?” Ranjaz made finger guns and laser noises.
“For Tulseria’s sake. No. Again. You have a higher level of clearance for accessing mining colonies, outposts and stations. And only if you have evidence that a criminal is present. You can liaise with Galactic Federation security officers and local system law enforcement, not boss them around, and lethal force is only allowed in the defense of life. Where do you get your information?”
With a dismissive wave of his hand, Ranjaz forgot everything he was just told. “That’s what the rule book says, but bounty hunters don't play by the rules! Every kid wants to be a bounty hunter, just like Selva Blaster.”
Embar almost choked. “From the children’s books?”
Ranjaz rolled his eyes. “Anyone can enjoy them; they’re literature. Trust me Aaron, bounty hunters are awesome and licenses are really hard to get. Plus, you’re unkillable!” Ranjaz’s eyes widened as he seemed to have a sudden epiphany. “You could be the greatest bounty hunter ever!”
Aaron laughed and shook his head. “I’m going home, but I appreciate the vote of confidence.” After a second or two of consideration he added, “Having a weapon might be useful though. Do I get a badge?”
Aaron looked at Embar’s uniform. “Like your shoulder patch. Something to show people and prove I am a real bounty hunter.”
Embar nodded as he understood. “No. Nothing like that. Just a holo-card with your details and a transponder chip that you can turn on to notify others. Once the documentation is done, the Lieutenant will drop it all off and sign over the reward money.”
Ranjaz had been quiet, apparently deep in thought. “You want dual blasters, one old model your grandfather carried in the cyborg wars and a Rinoxian Special you had customised with a thermal scope and laser sight.”
Embar groaned. “He’s not in your stupid book. Maybe, he wants an Earth weapon? Something John Rambo would carry!”
Aaron laughed. “I doubt I could walk around with an M60 all day. A colt peacemaker might be cool. If the fabricators can make it? I could be a sheriff, or marshall.”
Embar looked at Aaron quizzically. “You called a weapon peacemaker? And yes, your primitive weapons aren’t complicated and the records are pretty detailed. Alexa is already working on parts for some sort of computer box for playing games. Seems to me like a waste of resources. Your people seem to love games more than any other, and you’ve made them addictive. First Alexa couldn’t get enough of them, and now Ranjaz has joined in.”
Ranjaz made an obscene gesture and stretched out on the sofa once more, then returned his attention to his datapad. Holding it up for Embar to see, he pointed to a large red bird. “I call that one Embar.” He drew it back in a tiny slingshot before firing it at some green cartoon pigs. “He’s just big and doesn’t do anything special.”
Embar looked at Aaron, who shrugged and returned to Embar’s point. “Games are fun, they help you unwind, teach problem solving and teamwork. Some are good for learning other skills, they have economies and stuff.” He saw the sceptical look on Embar’s face as Ranjaz unleashed profanities at the cartoon pigs. “You just need to find one that appeals to you. Or don’t, it doesn’t really matter. Alexa is a bit obsessive. She heard about PC gaming and now she isn’t satisfied with the phone games. She’s determined to join the master race.”
Embar looked solemnly at Aaron. “Wars have been fought over that idea.”
Aaron was saved from explaining the intricacies of the console wars by the arrival of Jar’Bek. The lawyer was wearing a very smart suit and an exhausted expression, and walked straight to the food replicator with only a perfunctory wave to the others as a greeting. “Arkellian bastards.”
Aaron, happy to change subject, moved to the table and sat beside Embar. “Problems?”
Jar’Bek returned with a glass of water, and a plate of salad. “Stalling, lots of stalling. Everything they do is to buy time until the Azrimad leaves, then they can spin this out forever, and just ignore us.”
Aaron tapped his foot as he thought. “How long do the planet inspections usually take?”
Ranjaz called out from the sofa. “Small colonies can be done as fast as thirty cycles. A home world takes a whole celes at least. It’s a whole damn planet.” Aaron was beginning to breathe a sigh of relief when Ranjaz continued, “We’ve been here almost one and a half celes, but have encountered so many regulation breaches we've been working almost nonstop. Glad we're leaving in ten cycles - some crudhole station and a string of colonies a few systems over is next. Should be calmer.”
Aaron turned back to Jar'Bek. "Shit. What do we do?"
Jar'Bek nodded, unceremoniously shoving a forkful of leaves into his mouth. He chewed, swallowed, and took a long drink of water before replying. "We need to apply pressure, but we have none. You don’t even have a planet to get outraged on your behalf.”
A voice drifted up from the other side of the sofa as Ranjaz offered his wisdom. “You’re a bounty hunter now, just get them to commit a crime and shoot them.”
Jar’Bek’s eyes grew wide with surprise.”Bounty hunter?”
Embar laughed; it was a source of great pleasure to him seeing the lawyer caught off guard. “It’s true. The documentation should be through tomorrow.”
Jar’Bek looked genuinely perplexed. “Why? Do you think we’re going to lose?”
Aaron leaned back in his seat. “I never applied. Look, forget the bounty hunter stuff. We’ve got to figure out how to get an agreement out of the Arkellians while we still have the Azrimad forcing them to play nice.”
Ranjaz’s voice floated up from behind the sofa. “Can I be a bounty hunter?”
Embar replied sharply, “Not with your record.”
Embar seemed to recall something. “Sassie is getting a license as well, she was part of the arrests and has the same status as Aaron.”
“Dog the Bounty Hunter.” Aaron waited a second before realising no one else would get that.
Ranjaz was incensed. “She’s already an Ambassador! It’s not fair!”
Embar laughed. “She was not wanted across a dozen systems.”
Ranjaz whined loudly. “I want to be a Bounty Hunter, I bet I’d be awesome. I already know all about criminals so catching them would be easy.”
Embar scooped up the cushion Ranjaz had thrown and tossed it back at the Kittran. “You are a criminal!”
Ranjaz, in a mock wounded voice, replied, “Was a criminal. I’m an upstanding X.B.P.A. agent now.”
Jar’Bek sighed. He had sought other living quarters, but when word had spread that he was an Ashi the availability of rooms for rent plummeted. It was kindhearted of Aaron to take him in, and he was grateful for the assistance, but the constant comings and goings were an unbearable distraction. Ranjaz in particular had a way of derailing conversations that left the Ashi baffled. Alexa had put some games onto his datapad and that had bought them some peace. “Can we please focus on the time-sensitive lawsuit and not the ridiculous notion of becoming bounty hunters. This is not a stupid Selva Blaster novel!”
Ranjaz’s head popped up over the back of the sofa. “Selva Blaster would shoot you for saying that!”
Jar’Bek bristled. “Yes, he would. Because those books always paint my race as bloodthirsty raiders! You know, he has killed at least a dozen Ashi in every book.”
Ranjaz sank back down. Realising he may have hit a nerve, he decided it might be best to stop. Then discarded that idea. “He doesn’t like lawyers either, so you’re double fucked.”
Jar’Bek shot up from his seat, knocking it backwards onto the floor. “Because he never follows the law. He should be the wanted one! He has kidnapped, tortured, lied, murdered and slept his way across the Federation and half the Imperium at this point. He should be the most wanted criminal ever!” Jar’Bek’s voice was getting louder, and Embar put his hand out to calm him. It was irritably pushed aside. “He kills Ashi on sight, and then wonders why they shoot at him on sight. He stole a secret weapon from the Rinoxian military and blew up a moon. Did he face charges? Was it even an appropriate response to someone stealing his grandfather's gun?”
Ranjaz yelled back, “It has sentimental value!”
The lawyer grabbed fistfuls of his own hair and screwed his face up in silent anger. When he spoke his voice was calm and even, but strained, as if the yelling was a sliver of control away. “You can’t do whatever you want just because you’re popular!”
Ranjaz, his voice holding no anger, but perhaps a note of humour. “Pretty sure that’s exactly how politics works.”
Jar’Bek looked from Aaron to Embar, and seeing their blank expressions realised he had once again been goaded into a frivolous argument by the Kittran. “I’m going to Alexa’s room to try and think of a solution without annoying interruptions.” He gathered his things quickly, shooting the back of the sofa murderous glances.
As the door to the second bedroom closed, Ranjaz said, “See, Embar. Everyone reads those novels. Not just kids.”
Embar stood and stretched. “Stop teasing him, we need him to focus. Aaron can’t just declare war on everyone until he gets what he wants.” The sergeant turned to Aaron. “You aren’t declaring war again, right?”
Aaron pretended to consider the suggestion. “I mean, it worked last time. And I have a general to advise me.”
Embar was halfway to the door. “You’re as bad as Ranjaz. I’m going home, you should be focusing on the problem before you.”
Aaron nodded, but his mind was already elsewhere.
Aaron stepped out of the training shuttle, swinging a small bag over his shoulder. Alexa was waiting for him with Sassie, and he immediately knelt to greet his dog. Playfully he pushed her back as she used her body weight to lean on him, her tail wagging furiously. Alexa watched as the instructor gripped the door frame tightly, and shakily stepped down onto the shuttle landing pad. “Did it go well?”
Aaron looked up, still wrestling gently with Sassie. “Yeah. Getting the hang of it. The new controls you designed are much better.” He patted his bag. “Pretty handy they let you adapt them to your species.”
“Not all species have the same appendages.”
“Exactly, and I’m already very familiar with a playstation controller. A few extra buttons and a separate keypad. Boom! Ace pilot. Well, I got my learner’s permit at least.” Aaron stood, looking particularly pleased with himself as he displayed a green card with a 3D hologram of his head floating from its surface.
Alexa shook her head in faux disgust. "You are a filthy casual," she said with a broad smile, and held up a gold card. "I passed my full test, and I am licensed for Intra-System Grav Drives.”
Aaron turned back to thank the instructor, who squealed angrily and fled. “What did you do?” Alexa asked Aaron pointedly.
Aaron turned back around, looking genuinely perplexed. “Nothing! I told you, the new controls were great, just like a game. I was in perfect control, loops, rolls and the acceleration was awesome. I’m telling you I’m a natural. In fact, I think I might look at getting a Kittran racer, something with a bit more speed.”
As they walked towards the exit they passed by Ha’Mon’s workstation where the instructor was yelling at the three vehicle enthusiasts. “It was you, wasn't it Clak-Soon! You sent that lunatic!”
On Ha’Mon’s screen was a display of the course, a series of nav-points the pilot must navigate through with some holographic obstacles thrown in. The suggested blue line cut a sweeping route through the points, a red line cut a much sharper line, zig-zagging wildly. Clak-Soon was puffing out his chest. “Look at that time! The last human is a natural.”
Ha’Mon was trying to calm down the instructor as Aaron walked past. “First!” he yelled. “First human!”
“I damn well hope not,” the instructor yelled back before throwing down his datapad and storming off.
Captain Slo was looking over the flight data. “Human, you should be more careful. You will get longer battery life if you use lower braking and acceleration.”
Ha’Mon was looking at the ship's internal data with an engineer's eye. “Lefu’Yendra, your reaction speeds are incredible.” Aaron was about to reply when Ha’Mon continued, “Wow! Look at Alexa’s score!”
A purple line appeared on the display, taking an optimised path between the red and blue, expertly balancing speed and efficiency. Alexa had a slightly slower time but had preserved an additional six percent battery. She smiled and gave Aaron a playful shove. “Looks like I am first.”
The others laughed, and after they all congratulated Alexa and explained to Aaron how he could improve they were finally able to say their goodbyes. Once inside the elevator Aaron’s shoulders sagged as he relaxed. “You have a license, so you can take me out for more practice before the test?”
Alexa nodded. “You don’t need more practice, though - you will pass with ease.”
Sassie pushed her head against Aaron’s pocket and he pulled out a biscuit. “Last one. Sorry, I’ll make you some proper food when we get back.” Sassie crunched the biscuit and Alexa smiled at the pair. “What’s so funny?”
“I am still not sure which of you owns the other.”
“We’re a team.” Aaron gave Alexa a slap on the shoulder. “You too. Earthling Crew.”
Alexa had never felt a sense of belonging, the world they had been found on simply a place that had had the right composition of rare earth minerals. Her people were at once individuals and a collective, feeling no emotional bond. Here and now though, she felt like she belonged. It didn’t matter where they were, these two were her home. However... “We are not being called Earthling Crew.”
“Sol Squad?”
“Gaian Gang?”
“Ugh, no.”
“Team Terran?”
“No… well, maybe. I’m not from Earth.”
The doors opened and Aaron led them from the elevator. “True. So something with Alliance? Or Association? Maybe League?”
“Cupcake Coalition.” Aaron turned to look at her and she patted him gently on the head as she walked past. “Named after your greatest contribution to the galaxy.”
“Not bad, actually. I sold over one hundred and thirty-five thousand yesterday.” He saw the look of shock on her face and smiled.
“How?” Alexa was genuinely amazed; only a few cycles ago it had been eight thousand.
Aaron tapped the side of his nose. “Top secret. Actually, I might need your help for the next part. You in?”
“Is it illegal?”
Aaron looked at the back of Alexa’s head as she led the way back to their suite. “No! Absolutely not. Well… I haven’t checked. But, probably not. Does it matter? We’re not technically in the Galactic Federation. We can get away with a little rebellion.”
“Rebel Alliance?” Alexa suggested, turning her head and winking awkwardly.
“Only if you make me a lightsaber.”
“For the hundredth time, no.” Alexa pointed at him. “You promised Estrilla you wouldn’t make one. Everyone loses a hand in those movies and she is not reattaching hands so you can have a lethal toy.”
“I know, I know.” Aaron caught up with Alexa, Sassie walking between them. “So, you wanna know how I sold so many cupcakes?”

We are in the eye of the hurricane, the other side is going to be worse.

Volume is low, volatility is dropping and everyone seems to think the worst is behind us.
Quite the opposite is about to occur.
Investors are being blinded by a Fed who are building a wall of money to contain this credit crisis. Printing trillions hoping this monstrosity of bad policy will be swiftly overlooked, and for the most part it has. Never before have we seen the level of support the fed has been willing to give and investors think that is enough. When the Fed backs you, you keep pumping. Because of the broad nature of the assistance, I believe neither Mnuchin nor Powell know, or care about the actual consequences. They've cast a wide net in hopes that they've solved every problem that will come their way in this crisis. I'm not quite sure if they're stupid, or if they're drinking the same Kool-aid this admistration is pumping out. We all know its bullshit and there is no way we see new highs by Q1 of next year. BOTH Mnuchin and Powell should be on the hook for this; Mnuchin for embezzelment and fraud and Powell for accessory to it. They make Bernanke and Paulson look like choir boys.
When the reality sets in, and everyone realizes there will be no V-shaped recovery, it will be too late. The bets being placed now on a speedy recovery are the final nail in the coffin and this time, the fed will be completely out of ammo. With rates stuck at 0 for the foreseeable future, and a deficit well beyond our means, the fed will be forced to ask the Congress again for extra powers akin to socialism. There will be no recovery, no rebound, no making whole of the people.
This is the end of The Great Expansion. The end of capitalism as we know it and most likely the beginning of the end of the United States as a world power and the end of the Dollar as the reserve currency. Dark days ahead.
Should pale death, with treble dread, make the ocean caves our bed, God who hears the surges roll, deign to save the suppliant soul.

[OC] What if every world cup team had the same population? - Group G

Afternoon all, welcome back to the series that Gary Neville described as ‘How did you get this number, no I don’t know what you’re on about, piss off’. So far I’ve brought to life the teams of 24 hypothetical regions, that’s an entire Euro 2020’s worth! hmm that gives me an idea...
Before I begin separating the counties of Estonia, let’s stay focused and remind ourselves of how we got this far.
Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, Group E, Group F,
Today’s post details the squads of the tournament’s penultimate group. Whilst this pool of players isn’t the greatest, they will be playing in front of the most participant sets of fans. Mexican waves meet Vuvuzelas in the battle for top spot while the other two’s wavin flags will look like this.
Southern Africa
South Africa, Lesotho, Eswantini, Mauritius, Reuinion, Comoros, Seychelles, Madagascar, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Angola, Tanzania
Population (millions): 255.34
The part of the world that brought us the only African world cup to date (and some other less wholesome moments in history), this southern hemispheric subcontinent has underachieved in modern memory.
The region is a mix of engrossed and apathetic when it comes to footballing subscription in the public consciousness, with four of the top seven African GDP’s per capita, their resources should theoretically be better than anyones. Just four World Cup qualifications (one of those by default) makes this the second least punctual region of the continent.
Lusophone’s Angola are the exception to an otherwise South African sweep of appearances. The ‘Giant sable antelopes’ (I’m sure it sounds better in portuguese) shocked the CAF by toppling Nigeria by the narrowest of margins to reach the 2006 finals; the nation’s top scorer and Barbie Girl singing eurodance group Akwá was the protagonist in a 1-0 win against the Super Eagles, this retrospectively acted as a tie-breaker when David & Goliath finished with the same points in their qualifying group. Their time in Germany was short yet respectable, conceding just two goals in three games and almost holding their colonisers Portugal to a bore draw, revenge is sweet.
A rugby nation by trade, South Africa were crowned World Cup champions just last year, unfortunately for soccer fans they have flattered to deceive in the world’s most beloved game. A ‘golden generation’ in 2002 featured the coloured careers of Steven Pienaar, Benni McCarthy, Lucas Radebe and Quinton Fortune; failing to escape an easy group, a huge opportunity missed. 18 years on Bafana Bafana’s only big names are of a literal sense.
Contrary to what I would have guessed, South Africa is not the regions most populous nation; Tanzania’s 56 million inhabitants puts them level with England, and the nation seem to identify as footyholics as much as their historic oppressors, unfortunately they haven’t got their money's worth for their sporting subscription.
The tiny island of reunion has produced the likes of Dimitri Payet and Laurent Robert, but since still being a French territory, anyone worth their salt gets a plane to Paris.
Botswana fail to feature in the squad, but with top clubs called ‘Meat Commision’ and ‘Miscellaneous’, it might be safe to say the nation isn’t taking the game as seriously as others.

On paper the team shouldn’t need to rely on talismanic powers as the middling quality runs true throughout this team. Aston Villa surely have a scout in this part of the world as they are blessed with the services of key players Marvellous Nakamba and Mbwana Samatta.
Samatta became the Premier League’s first Tanzanian in January and will hopefully have a chance to add to his three appearances sooner rather than later. The imposing frontman scored 23 goals in the Belgian league in 2018-19 which makes him almost over qualified to lead the line in this XI.
Patson Daka was 13 and playing for locals Nchanga Rangers when Zambia sensationally shocked the world to lift the 2012 AFCON; the goldenboy of a generation determined to sequel the Copper Bullets’ success. The speedy Salzburg striker already has 24 caps for his country, time will tell if he is to follow Haaland and Minamino out of Austria to a European giant.
Mononymous Angolan Bastos will command the defence as best he can. Although recently struggling to make the squad, Bastos has served Lazio well with his protective prowess.
A plethora of pacey playmakers completes the assembly that will most likely finish runners up in this group. An exit in the round of 16 is on the cards as by process of elimination lots of you have already worked out Group H’s heavyweights are North & Central Europe.
West India
3 Indian States (Maharashtra, Gujurat, Madhya Pradesh)
Population (millions)
All the way back to the simpler time of Group A I hastily declared Uttar Pradesh as the worst region in the world, I’d like to publicly apologize for that remark as it’s become clear to me that West India is the bottom of a very deep barrell.
The region that provides the setting for Slumdog Millionaire has plenty to answer for as finding 22 players in this part of the world was harder than a where's wally of Manish market.

With 8 caps for the national team, Rahul Bheke is made to look like prime Cafu alongside his defensive compatriots. The Bengaluru full back plays a leading role in a one-star Bollywood show.
Aniket Jadnav is maybe the one to keep an eye on, the wide forward failed trials at Blackburn late last year, but the fact that they even asked him makes this teenage talent the side’s crappy Mbappe.
A Bombay mix of unknowns will be thankful they haven’t drawn against the real heavyweights of the competition, or they could be on the end of a cricket score.
Mexico & Central US
Mexico, 16 US States (Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois)
Population (millions): 244.75
The big wall will have to wait as this side leaves rednecks turning in their trailers. The region has fathered two point three tournaments with one on the way, but the main feature of this team always seems to leave the party early when it’s not at their house.
Mexico have been excruciatingly expelled in the second round an eye-watering SEVEN times running, the sombrero wearing soccer obsessed Senior’s are so frequently the bridesmaid it’s no exaggeration to call them football’s spinsters.
The US’s largest state, Texas, is the birthplace of one of America’s greatest players and worst rappers, Clint Dempsey. His impressive club career was an MLS sandwich with a London filling, the posterboy of a Fulham team that miraculously reached the Europa league final. Romantically tied with fellow yank legend Landon Donovan, Dempsey retired joint top scorer for USMNT, including four goals in three seperate world cups.
Mexican legends of the game include Hugo Sanchez, who scored over 200 goals for Real Madrid, and Barcelona treble winner Rafael Marquez who incredibly played 19 games across five World Cups, considering they never manage more than four, that’s almost as good as it gets.
Today El Tri are seemingly at the beginning of a promising Mexican generation that coincides with some notable late bloomers.

One of the more mundane concoctions, it’s plain to see that Johnathan Brooks is the only ‘American’ to dare cross the border. The centre back scored a winner against Ghana in 2014 avenging the defeat of 2010.
After struggling badly at Atleti and then Benfica, it’s an unlikely story that aged 27 Raul signed for Wolves and has since become one of the Premier Leagues most feared strikers. The nation is hoping to harness whatever time he’ll be able to stay at this level, having scored five goals in a winning Gold Cup campaign.
Eredivisie fans will be familiar with Guardado and Alvarez, the bookends of a variety of age groups in the middle of the park.
‘Chucky’ Lozano is the posterboy, the Napoli winger scored the only goal in an historic victory over 2014 champions Germany. At just 24, it shouldn’t be of too much concern that he is competing to become a regular amongst fierce Neopolitan competition.
As usual, perhaps North-America’s best bet for success. They should win this group, but with the second round curse yet to be broken, maybe another John Brooks goal is needed to make the quarters.
Greater Beijing
7 Chinese provinces (Beijing, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Liaoning, Tianjin)
Population (millions): 246.63
The capital with plenty of capital, Beijing is the focal point of a Chinese region that stands the best chance of all it’s countryfolk. The region boasts half of the national team’s top ten appearance makers.
Liaoning is the most vibrant reserve of Chinese talent, defender Sun Jihai is often revered as the country's greatest player with 127 premier league appearances for Man City, after years of battling relegation his departure came just one month before the Abu Dhabi group took over, a cautious tale of what happens when you let cookies decide your fortune.
Domestic football is rife in the region with six of 16 CSL teams, including Beijing Guoan, who pay for the services of Cedric Bakambu and Renato Augusto.

Ex-Celtic and Charlton midfielder Zheng Zhi has 108 national caps and counting, still wearing the arm-band at 39 years old. An industrious and efficient playstyle combined with terrific passing range lends itself to still being able to compete at such a late age, although he will require the leg work of fellow 30-somethings Wu Xi and Chi Zhonguo if moves can be made.
Born in London, Nico Yennaris or ‘Li Ke’ was the first ever naturalised Chinese player, the former Arsenal youth and Brentford stalwart is hoping to become a trailblazer to the development of Asian football.
It isn’t an absolute certainty that this team will come third, but beating Southern Africa will be key, in a group of subjectively low quality, China’s best team is maybe their only hope.
Emotional times as tomorrow brings the final group, by this point it should be obvious who’s left.
See you all in the comments to discover what I’ve got wrong today (I will comb through the whole thing with your suggestions once this is done).

Theory: Mariah Carey “feminized” her voice!
The first video is of another cis female artist, but with the same principle applied. Probably in some ways more so. The entire recording ranges from C3 to C5, but timbrally it’s arguably more vast than the Mariah song. Happy is generally cited as a contralto... when she reveals her lower end, it’s evident.
The second clip ranges from Bb2 to Bb6. Yikes. Mariah Carey notoriously speaks comfortably in the 3rd octave. The first line of the song ends on Bb2... And by the end of it she’s approaching the seventh octave! And her upper notes are of course just enough brighter than the sultry lower croons.
Here are two more selections from them: (check out around 5:20 onward to hear her “voices” in countermelody... beautifully goes up to G#5!) (when I first heard this I thought she sounded “mezzo-ish”... she’s using a more “pulled” approach than usual)
Mariah Carey has from time to time discussed the basic “alto” nature of her voice... though most would describe her quite definitively as a coloratura soprano. How’d that happen? Most sopranos aren’t crooning a Bb2. And a good share of other performances showcase her hitting notes even lower than that.
Here’s a video I did on “The Soprano Hierarchy”, by the way: I bet there are plenty of women who consciously or subconsciously worked their way into soprano dominion, biology otherwise to forbid.
I think more people practice “feminization” than us alone, and some take it to extents near akin to what we as trans women might. The light and bright approach that these two cis ladies have to high notes — Mariah namely to her range in general, except when she uses a chestier approach — is very reminiscent of our building of multiple voices, multiple textures... a range & timbre excavated from an initial larger & darker source. I haven’t had someone fully & openly concur, but I do think that this makes sense. Even with Carey’s nodules, to create a continuous five-octave range that is sultry at the bottom of the bass clef and piercing well over an octave above treble, with powerful girlish belts that often belie her speaking voice... it just makes sense to call the cultivation of such a voice a similar process to voice feminization.
I believe it’s an illusion propagated, the idea that one is blessed with a four- or five-octave range, at least insofar as the blessing just as much is the will to work for it. Happy Rhodes, who has publicly displayed around F#2 to D6, is considered a four-octave singer — indeed her estate has apparently corroborated such claims. Considering the range in timbre and vocal weight, it may be astonishing, but it wouldn’t be surprising, that she would have an E2 and E6 lying around, for instance. One may have proclivity to this talent of multiple tessituras, but it almost certainly is built as well. Besides, look at Axl Rose. His bass-baritone voice is known by most as a ridiculously high rock tenor. That’s because he began experimenting with “different voices” in high school. His voice is rather shrill though, admittedly. And as far as Mariah, she built her extensive whistle range as a means of singing through the nodules she had since she had been a young child.
And of course, we likely have more incentive to feminize than any of them. With a little more pressure and a little more to surmount... but we’re generally used to it.
